Bromdenwants to sign the list, but he is afraid to blow his deaf-and-dumbcover, realizing that he has to “keep acting deaf if [he] wantedto hear at all.” He remembers that when he was ten, three peoplecame to his home to talk to his father about buying the tribe’sland. When Bromden spoke to them, they acted like he had not saida word. This memory represents the first time in a long time thathe has remembered something about his childhood.

Ratched threatensto cancel the trip because all the patients cannot fit into Candy’scar, and they do not have a second driver. In doing so, she discoversthat McMurphy lied about the cost of the rental to make a profitoff the other patients. She tries to use this information as partof her typical divide-and-conquer strategy, but the other patientsdo not seem to mind. McMurphy then persuades Doctor Spivey to comewith them and drive the second car. When they stop for gas, theattendant tries to take advantage of them. McMurphy gets out ofthe car and warns him that they are a bunch of crazy, psychopathicmurderers. The other patients, seeing that their illness could actuallybe a source of power for them, lose their nervousness and followhis lead in using their insanity to intimidate the attendant.
